News, equipment, information, furniture, jewelry, knowledge, work, homework, housework are uncountable nouns They take the verb in the singular form.

Ex: The news was important.

     This equipment is fragile.

     The correct information hasn't been passed to me.

Police  -  plural noun

The police are looking for the suspect.
