Avoiding Typical Errors With

Prepositions

 

 

In time   X   On time

When you arrive  in time  you arrive soon enough for something. (= a tempo de)

When you arrive  on time  you arrive punctually (= na hora certa)

 

Between   X   Among

Both prepositions mean   " entre "

Between  2  things  /  2 people

Among  3  or more things or people

Ex: I was sitting between Jessica and Carla.

     I celebrated my birthday among friends.

 

Like   X   As

Like is a preposition, so it is followed by a noun ( like a castle, like your town ), a pronoum ( like that  /  like me ) or ing form ( like dreaming ).

You can also say: like + someone  /  something + ing ( like a dog barking )

Like is used to compare things, analogically ( she walks like a cat  /  She isn't a cat )

We use as before a subject + verb.

Do it as I showed you.

We also use such as  without a verb.

Some people, such as the Chinese, live longer than others.

As usual is another expression when as is used.

He was late  as usual.

In comparisons  as  shows what something really is  ( e.g ; He works as a waiter  /  He is really a waiter )
